To Reward or Entertain Yourself
As children, we are rewarded with food. As a toddler you get a cookie as a reward for
picking up your toys or saying 'please' and 'thank you'. Later, you get dessert for cleaning
your plate, or for getting an 'A' on your exam. As teens, we go to the movies where part
of the entertainment is soft drinks, popcorn and candy. As adults, we celebrate by going
out to dinner. In business, we treat prospective clients to lunch.
When You Need Love
Try saying, 'I eat when I need love'. It almost hurts to say it. The more uncomfortable you
feel saying it to yourself, the more likely it is to be the cause of your overeating. It's
perfectly logical...As a baby, if you cried, you were fed. You were shown love during
those feedings. Perhaps now you eat when what you really want is to have someone
show you affection, give you a kind word...or hold you. If you're giving love in vain, you
may love yourself back with food.
Because of Fear
You may fear the potential of your own sexuality. If you are less attractive to the opposite
sex, you do not have to worry about the consequences, problems, and decisions a
relationship can bring. You can stay in your present situation, which demands little of
you emotionally or physically, because you are not sought after.
You Perceive Plumpness as a Sign of Health
Maybe you were raised to believe that being thin was unhealthy and therefore,
undesirable. The message you received as you grew up may have been 'plump is
healthy' therefore the extra weight keeps illness at bay.
Bad Eating and Sleeping Habits
Regardless of weight, you can be malnourished because your diet lacks necessary
nutrients which causes you to suffer fatigue and low energy. Some people snack day and
night to keep 'up' when what they really need is proper nutrition and sleep.
