Hypnosis was once a viable treatment approach for addictions. Then, due to hypnosis being used
for entertainment purposes many professionals lost confidence in it. However, it has now started to
make a comeback in the treatment of substance abuse. The approach described here, using
hypnosis for treatment, is borrowed from studies effectively treating alcoholism by using intensive
daily sessions. Combining the more intense treatment of 20 daily sessions with hypnosis is a
successful method to treat addictions. The treatment has been used with 18 clients over the last 7
years and has shown a 77 percent success rate for at least a 1-year follow-up.
According to Martensen (1997), in the nineteenth century hypnosis and alcoholism medically
converged and the results were very good. There was as high as an 80% success rates with
samples of up to 700 patients reported.
Alcohol abuse can ruin your life. It can drive all of your friends and family members away, it can
cost you your job, and it can destroy your health. If you have an alcohol problem, you probably
already know or are learning that this is true. You may even have tried to stop drinking on your own
or with a group support system and failed. Like any addiction, alcohol abuse can be very hard to
break, and if you’ve had trouble kicking the habit, you may want to consider hypnosis for your
alcohol abuse.
If you've ever seen a hypnosis stage show, you may have gotten the wrong impression of
what hypnosis really is and what it can do. You won't go into a trance and cluck like a chicken;
you won't do anything at all that you wouldn't normally do because you are never out of control of
yourself. At all times, you are aware of yourself and your surroundings. Hypnosis is a completely
safe and natural way to approach an alcohol problem.
It works like this: your mind has two parts, the conscious, which we use when we are awake and
alert, and the unconscious, where we store thoughts and fears. Addictions are stored here, too.
There is a barrier between the two minds that is very hard to breach on your own. You need to be in
a super-relaxed state to access your unconscious mind, and that is what hypnosis does. Through
deep breathing and other relaxation techniques you can get into your unconscious mind and into
the root of your addiction. You can discover why you abuse alcohol and learn to replace that
destructive behavior with something healthier and more positive.

person who drinks to excess and who then feels depressed will drink again to try and suppress or
numb the feelings of depression and so a vicious cycle begins.
The cycle continues with the possibility of a relationship or marriage breakdown, loss of a job then
leading to financial worries. All of these contribute to the depression which in turn leads to more
drinking.
The only person that can stop someone when drinking excessively permanently is the drinker
themselves. No amount of cajoling or persuading or threatening from love ones seems to make any
difference. As with anything in life that is worth having or obtaining, it all begins with a decision. The
decision comes first and then the action follows.
As with anything, it will not be the right vehicle for everyone. IF you have attended an AA session and
found them not to you liking, it is not an excuse to give up. It means that either you need to find an AA
group that does feel better for you or another form of help may be what you need.
Hypnosis has been used to help people with a drink issue. It still requires the drinker to take
responsibility for themselves and their life choices. Our 7 step change your mind change your life
program may be able to help you, if you are serious about regaining your life. If you take
responsibility, we will help you along the way.
